Ty Trist - House of Sorrow
Ty Trist colliery took its name from the old farmhouse which existed on the side of the valley overlooking the site where the pit was later sunk.
The origin of the name ( Welsh for house of sorrow ) is long forgotten
but the place was regarded as associated with some terrible events,
details of which were never properly recorded.
It is said townspeople would avoid venturing near the area,
particularly during the hours of darkness.

Extract from Powell's History of Tredegar
Ty Trist - House of Sorrow or Sadness
"Whether this is the original name or not, we are not in a position to decide.
This old house was notorious as the home of a hobgoblin, termed "Bwca Trwyn" who,
it is stated, was prone to milk every cow in the locality.
Terrible tales were current relative to the deeds of this frightful apparition;
and it was as well known that Ty Trist was continually haunted
by the venerable Bwca, it was nearly a matter of impossibility to have
the house inhabited."
