The Plague at Bedwellty

plague

In 1638, the Plague visited the Valley.
The story is told of a man named Gomer, who returned home to Bedwellty after a long journey.
As he entered his home he discovered his wife and children all lying dead.
Calling at his neighbours' houses for assistance to bury his loved ones, he discovered that they too, had succumbed to the disease.
It is said that out a population of around one hundred people, only three survived.

The bodies of the deceased, reputedly, unable to receive a proper burial, were laid out on the floor of the church and earth scattered over them.
When the church was renovated many years later, as the floor was excavated the bones of the unfortunate victims were revealed.
