Hi there! I grew up in Cwmfelinfach - my parents kept a shop next door but one to the Workmen's Hall. My maiden name was Susan Marsden and I went to Cwmfelinfach Junior School and then to Pontllanfraith Grammar School. In 1975 my husband, daughter and I emigrated to South Africa where our son was born in 1977. I haven't been back since 1977 mainly due to medial problems. My son became very ill in 1991 and in 1993 had a kidney transplant. We are hoping to visit in the next few years. I am currently employed as Credit Controller at the Business School of the University of South Africa and my husband runs his own personnel consultancy.

Hi Wayne, and anyone else that knows me. It's been a while since I visited the site. Wanting to hear from anyone about the 'Ghosts' in the Dingle and on the old track up to the Hafod Tudor ruins. Asked locally, and only names given were 'Nettie Waters', or 'Henry Williams' who lived at Hafod Tudor Ganol. Come on,who can 'throw a light' on this one.

I have traced my ancestors to the 1881 census. They were Michael and Bridget Roach of 4 Morgan Row in the district of Bedwellty. Does anyone know if Morgan Row still exists? Michael was a steel worker, born in Ireland. They had a number of children, mostly born in Dowlais. In the 1901 census they were living with their daughter, Mary, and her husband, John Hennessy in the parish of Rhymney St Mary. Mary and John Hennessy are my maternal great grandparents. Very informative site, thank you.

I was an evacuee from Dover from 1940 to 1943.I was with Mr&Mrs Spillet at 20 Mill St.Cwmfelinfach until Mrs Spillet was called up for munition work, when we then went to live with her mother,Mrs James at 16,Syndicate terrace. These were some of the happiest days of my life, they treated me as one of the family. My biggest regret is not keeping ih touch on my return to Dover

My Grandfather John Jones was born in Contractors row Sirhowy on February 15th 1866 to John and Matilda Jones, who were married in Llanelly Parish church May 21st 1854. My Grandfather married Mary Ann Saunders on November 5th 1894 in Llanelly Parish Church, they soon moved to Resolven Vale of Neath and my Grandfather lost touch with his family. I believe that Silvanus Jones [My Great Great Grandfather] owned the California [Slope] and Deep Pit & Drift in Nantyglo. Does anyone have any information please, I would be very grateful. Thank You John

Dear Sir, I am now an aged pensioner living in Victoria, Australia. In June 1940 I was evacuated from Dover, Kent and lived initially with a Mr and Mrs E. Hardwick of 5 Pen-y-cwarel Rd, Wyllie but when Mrs Hardwick was drafted for munitions work I had to move to new foster parents. I was taken to a late middle aged couple Mr and Mrs W (Walter) Evans of 36 Maindee Road, Cwmfelinfach. He was the hostler at Nine Mile point and they both were lovely people giving me much love and attention and I remember he never seemed to stop smiling. Some years previously they had lost their eldest son and the only remaining one was George, who at the time I arrived with them had been called up and was serving with the South Wales Borders. On those few occasions when he came on leave he too was very kind to me and I recall he always gave me 2/6 from his meagre army pay. The lady who lived opposite in what was previously a shop premise was a very big lady with an equally big heart (I think maybe a widow) who also would make a big fuss of me - a Mrs Hancock. I also recall that on the left hand side going down the very steep curving hill from the pub lived a lady whom I only knew as 'Olive' and she was a kitchen staff member at the red corrugated iron dining hall located in the grounds of the school at Ynysddu (we used the Sadis Chapel as a classroom!) I left Mr and Mrs Evans when I returned to my family in Oct 1943 and I would really love to find out what happened to these people, if they are still living and where, in particular George Evans. They were such wonderful people to have received us under what were already trying times for them and they opened their homes and hearts to us so it would be so wonderful to be able to become acquainted with them again - for us it was a really big adventure in a paradise playground and those years were the happiest of my young life. Is there any way in which you can help me please - I would like to relate my life story to them and to thank them for what they did? Yours very gratefully, Brian Newby (now 76).
