Love the web site with the local history and Myth & Legends pages. Interesting to read about the fairies on Bedwellty Common as a cousin of mine had a scary incident with an apparition coming to the car window as they watched a lightning storm about 1 month ago (May 2008). was it the fairies?? Disappointed that there is no mention of my village, Cefn Fforest. any reasons why?

Hello Yes I have fond memories of Markham, use to walk through Markham pit over the Sirhowy river up to Manmoel to my then grandmother Joan Poulton, we girls often swam in the river when it was black from the pit what memories going home with black tide marks on your legs and arms.

From 1940 to 1941 I was evacuated from Ilford,Essex to Sirhowy. I was billeted with the baker. I can't remember the name of the family but what I do remember was having my tub in a tin bath in the bakehouse behind the house. With the dough rising for the next bake the smell was glorious and it was lovely and warm. Later on my mother and baby brother came and we lodged with an elderly lady in what was then the last house on the right going up the valley. Beyond that was a stone wall with steps going up from pavement level. If anyone can fill in any details for me I would be very grateful. Richard Akers

Hi, I'm originally from Rogerstone but have lived in Wattsville for a few years now. (Frank Coles' place by the Arch) Nice place. Looking for any family of Harold Charles Pritchard b 1907 possibly from Blaina ? Heard a good local group recently - Five Mile Drive, anyone know anything of them, or how long they have been going ?? Good luck, Dawn

Greetings. Have just learned that my great grandfather, Jacob D.Thomas was born in Sirhowy Valley in appx. 1858. He married Mary Ann Warner (?) and he died in 1934. Anyone with anymore information on him please let me know. I have been looking for this information for about 50 years.
